Privacy Notice for California Residents (CCPA & CPRA)

This Privacy Notice for California Residents supplements the information contained in the main Privacy Policy of Boston Research Journals and applies solely to our users, visitors, and others who reside in the State of California (“consumers” or “you”). We adopt this notice to comply with the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act of 2020 (CPRA). Any terms defined in the CCPA and CPRA have the same meaning when used in this notice.

We obtain these categories of Personal Information from the following sources:

  • Directly from you: When you create an account, submit a manuscript, contact us, or subscribe to our newsletters.

  • Indirectly from you: By observing your activity on our website (e.g., through cookies).

  • From third parties: Such as co-authors on a submitted manuscript or from academic institutions.

2. Use of Personal Information

We may use or disclose the Personal Information we collect for one or more of the following “business purposes” or “commercial purposes”:

  • To manage the entire publishing lifecycle, including manuscript submission, peer review, editorial decisions, and publication.

  • To communicate with you about your submissions, reviews, or inquiries.

  • To create, maintain, and secure your account with us.

  • To process payments for our services, such as Article Processing Charges (APCs).

  • To operate and improve our website, ensuring security and optimizing user experience.

  • To send you newsletters, calls for papers, and other marketing communications you have consented to receive.

  • To respond to law enforcement requests and as required by applicable law, court order, or governmental regulations.

  • To maintain the integrity and historical record of scholarly publication.

3. Sharing and Selling of Personal Information

Boston Research Journals does not “sell” your Personal Information in the traditional sense (i.e., for monetary exchange). However, under the CCPA/CPRA, the term “sell” is broadly defined. We also “share” Personal Information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

  • Disclosures for Business Purposes: In the preceding twelve (12) months, we have disclosed the categories of personal information listed above to the following categories of third parties for a business purpose:

    • Service Providers: Who provide services such as website hosting, payment processing, and analytics.

    • Peer Reviewers and Editors: For the purpose of conducting the peer review and editorial process.

    • Publishing Partners: Such as indexing and archiving services.

  • Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA/CPRA rights.

Only you, or a person registered with the California Secretary of State that you authorize to act on your behalf, may make a verifiable consumer request.

Your request must provide sufficient information that allows us to reasonably verify you are the person about whom we collected Personal Information. We will only use the Personal Information provided in a verifiable request to verify the requestor’s identity or authority to make the request.

6. Children’s Privacy

Our services are not directed to individuals under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect, sell, or share the Personal Information of consumers under 16 years of age.

7. Changes to This Privacy Notice

We reserve the right to amend this privacy notice at our discretion and at any time. When we make changes, we will post the updated notice on our website and update the “Last Updated” date.
