What Journal Editors and Peer Reviewers Look For

Most guides stop at choosing a methodology. If you intend to publish, it also has to survive peer review, and reviewers read a methodology section with specific questions in mind. These are the checks that come up again and again in editorial practice at Boston Research Journals and across scholarly publishing.

Could someone repeat the study? The accepted standard across major publishers is that a methods section must contain enough detail for an independent researcher to replicate the work. Named instruments, sampling procedure, inclusion criteria, and analysis steps all need to be on the page, not implied.

Is every choice justified? Describing what you did is not enough. Reviewers look for why this design fits this research question, and why the obvious alternatives were not used. An unjustified choice reads as an unexamined one.

Do question, design and analysis line up? A mismatch between the research question and the analysis, for example a causal claim built on a correlational design, is among the most common reasons a methodology triggers major revisions.

Why Methodology Kills Manuscripts: The Evidence

The reviewer checklist above is not folklore. In the most cited study of why reviewers actually reject papers, Bordage analyzed the peer reviews behind 123 rejected manuscripts, with each paper read by an average of four reviewers who each gave about eight distinct reasons (Academic Medicine, 2001). Roughly 70 percent of all negative comments came down to about twenty recurring reasons.

What stands out is where those reasons cluster. Of the top ten, the majority are methodology failures rather than topic or writing problems:

Six of the top ten reasons trace directly back to decisions made at the methodology stage: which analysis fits the design, which instrument fits the question, how the sample was drawn, and what the data can honestly support. A study can survive weak prose. It rarely survives a design that cannot answer its own research question.

The CONSORT update is recent and worth knowing about: the 2025 revision, published simultaneously in The BMJ, JAMA, The Lancet, Nature Medicine, and PLOS Medicine, expanded the checklist from 25 to 30 items and added a dedicated open science section covering registration, protocol access, and data sharing.
